Taklimakan is world's second-largest shifting sand desert.
The Tarim Desert Highway passes through the desert, also known as the "Sea of Death."

To prevent the erosion of the highway by quicksand, a project was launched in 2003 to plant a green belt along the road.

Over 14 hundred kilometers away from Xinjiang, is Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

A group of Chinese scientists have been supporting the city's Green Belt project for years. (Xinhua Global Service)
